So, is ADHD on the autism spectrum?
The short answer is no – ADHD is not part of the autism spectrum.
However, the longer answer is more nuanced.
ADHD and autism often overlap, frequently co-occur, and share several neurological and behavioural similarities. Many people relate strongly to both sets of traits, and some identify with the blended lived experience often called AuDHD.
Understanding the differences and the overlaps helps people get clearer answers, accurate diagnosis, and the right support.
ADHD and autism: separate conditions, shared foundations
Although ADHD and autism are distinct diagnoses, research shows they share several underlying features, including:
1. Shared genetic influences
Large-scale genetic studies show ADHD and autism have overlapping heritability patterns. This helps explain why they often appear in the same families and why some individuals experience both conditions. [1]
2. Differences in neural connectivity
Both conditions involve differences in how brain networks communicate.
- In ADHD, these differences affect attention regulation, impulse control and motivation pathways.
- In autism, they relate more to sensory processing, social communication and pattern-based thinking.
3. Impacts on executive function
Executive function includes planning, organisation, working memory and flexible thinking. People with ADHD or autism can experience challenges in these areas, but for different reasons:
- ADHD often involves difficulty sustaining attention, initiating tasks and managing time.
- Autism may involve cognitive rigidity, difficulty shifting between tasks, or sensory overload that disrupts executive function.
4. Co-occurrence is common
Research suggests 30–50% of autistic individuals also meet criteria for ADHD, and many with ADHD show autistic traits. This is why many people identify as AuDHD, a term describing the lived experience of having both conditions. [2]

While not identical, there are several shared traits which can make the two conditions seem connected, including:
- Sensory sensitivities
- Difficulties with emotional regulation
- Social fatigue
- Executive function challenges
- Need for structure or routine
- Hyperfocus on specific interests
- Differences in processing speed
These similarities can make diagnosis tricky, especially for adults or for people who may have learned to mask their traits.
ADHD and autism differences
Even with the overlap, the two conditions show important distinctions. Here are some real-life, everyday examples of the differences.
Communication style
ADHD: Tends to be more impulsive, talkative or fast-paced.
Autism: Communication differences may relate to social cues, literal language, or needing more time to process.
Attention patterns
ADHD: Difficulty sustaining attention or easily distracted.
Autism: May focus deeply for long periods, especially on areas of interest.
Social interaction
ADHD: Social difficulties often come from impulsivity or distractibility.
Autism: Differences stem from social communication patterns, sensory processing or interpreting cues.
Sensory processing
ADHD: Sensory seeking (movement, fidgeting) is common.
Autism: Sensory sensitivities to things like light, noise, or textures can be more pronounced.
