ToggleThere was probably a time when you made plans and kept them. You were reliable at work, you enjoyed a social life, and you’d buy tickets to concerts without a second thought, confident you’d be able to have a great night.
Then something changed. Perhaps your child was diagnosed as autistic, your partner developed Parkinson’s, or your mum’s dementia took hold. Now some days unravel before breakfast. Midday phone calls from school mean you’re often leaving work apologetically, and late-night emergencies disrupt your sleep. These days, you’d never buy tickets three months out. That kind of confident planning feels like it belongs to someone else’s life.
When you’re caring for someone with a neurological condition, you get a crash course in adaptability. You learn to enjoy the good moments, but you’re forced to adjust quickly to sudden changes. It’s a very different way of life and it takes a particular strength to live it.
This guide is written for you. It explains some of the brain-based reasons behind common challenges and shares practical neuroplasticity strategies you can use at home.
Why neuroplasticity matters
You may have heard the term neuroplasticity, which describes the brain’s ability to form and strengthen neural connections in response to repeated experiences. In short, the brain is literally shaped by what it encounters regularly.
Think of a morning routine: every day, it’s the same sequence of getting up, washing, dressing and eating breakfast. That regular repetition, rhythm, and predictability help reinforce helpful neural pathways.
For someone with autism or dementia, a familiar morning routine may help reduce cognitive load, ease anxiety, and help them feel more settled. Small, consistent moments often have more impact than occasional intensive efforts.
Understanding difficult behaviours
Meltdowns, withdrawal, aggression, repetitive actions, or sudden mood changes can be distressing for everyone involved. Understanding the neuroscience behind these behaviours can shift your perspective from What is wrong with them? to What is happening in their nervous system?
Many challenging behaviours result from a dysregulated autonomic nervous system. When the brain perceives a threat, it triggers a stress response. That ‘threat’ doesn’t have to be imminent physical danger; sensory overload counts too.
Your loved one is not being deliberately difficult, and their reactions are probably not about you. Their brain is doing its best under significant neurological strain. And it may be possible to ease some of that strain with a few changes at home.
Creating a calmer home environment
The brain is constantly receiving information through its 8 senses. Alongside sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, there’s proprioception (body position), vestibular (balance), and interoception (internal cues like hunger or thirst).
For people with neurological conditions such as autism, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, processing all of that input can become overwhelming and sensory overload often shows up as emotional outbursts or meltdowns.
It’s also worth knowing that the same person may be over-sensitive to some sensory input (struggling with noise, bright lights, or certain fabrics) while being under-sensitive to others (not registering pain or hunger; though you may well see the hangry behaviour).
A few small changes may help to manage sensory issues, reduce distress and help your loved one feel more settled. You could try:
- Lighting: Use warm, dimmable lights and remove harsh fluorescent bulbs where possible.
- Sound: Turn off background television or radio when not in use. Create quiet spaces or play soothing music; everyone’s tastes are different.
- Clothing and touch: Prioritise your loved one’s comfort and remove any clothes they find scratchy or intolerable. Weighted blankets or cushions may also help with regulation.
- Visual clarity: Reduce clutter and use labels, colour-coded storage, or picture schedules to support orientation.
- Movement input: Using large muscle groups can provide proprioceptive input that can help regulate the nervous system. It doesn’t have to be full-on weight training; carrying the groceries counts.
Autism
Focus on connection over compliance and harness any special interests to help them learn skills.
Try creating a sensory-soothing space where they can self-regulate. This could be a cosy tent in the bedroom with fairy lights, fluffy cushions, noise-cancelling headphones and a weighted toy, for example. Regular use of this space may help to reduce meltdowns, along with a predictable routine and reminders to eat or drink regularly if they often forget.
Dementia
When memory and language begin to fail, emotion remains. Rather than correcting memory errors, respond to the feeling underneath the words. If someone says they want to go home, for example, they may be expressing a need for familiarity, safety or comfort.
Music-based approaches may help: familiar songs often reach people long after other forms of communication have become difficult.
Parkinson’s disease
Rhythmic auditory stimulation (walking to music or a metronome) can help to support gait. Creative activities like art naturally combine hand–eye coordination, cognitive engagement, and a sense of purpose, making them valuable on multiple levels.
